Over the weekend I attended/assisted at a photography workshop held by Marta Locklear. She touched a bit on how she likes to run her business and it really helped me to reevaluate some aspects of mine. Okay,okay, she may have called me out on giving my work away for too little more than once too. But she had a really good point of not devaluing what your work is worth, something I have always had a hard time with. And for such a successful photographer to tell you that your work is worth so much more it really helps you see it too. It is tough especially in the beginning of a new business venture to be able to say, yep, I charge $50 for a single 8 x 10 because it's worth it hoping that your potential clients think so to. I started my business because I love creating art for others to enjoy and photography was a medium that I had a lot of passion for. But being completely honest, no one can pay the bills much less make any profit by just giving their hard work away for free. A couple of months ago after being discouraged about the direction my business was going I made a slightly spur of the moment decision to change my prices to include all the digital files in the session fee for a really low price. I figured, everyone is wanting the digital files anyway if I include them in a lower price my business will prosper and that means being able to do what I love full time. Right?
Wrong!!! It didn't help in the least bit. I didn't notice any difference and I wasn't even breaking even! Not only that but I wasn't marketing towards people that want to hire me for my work, I was marketing towards people that want pictures taken by someone other than themselves for really cheap. And that doesn't fulfill my needs as a creative photographer. So this morning, I sat up in bed at 6 am, grabbed my laptop and changed all the prices on my website back to what they originally were. And for those of you who know me really well I am not nor have I ever been a morning person. For me to crawl out of bed that early without being dragged kicking and screaming against my own will, I knew it was the right thing to do. So even if I don't have a hundred clients booking with me or even 50 for that matter. I will have clients that value my work just as much as I do and that is what really counts.

Feeling Hopeful | Fredericksburg Lifestyle Photographer

The last couple of months have been very trying for me physically and emotionally and I haven't been able to focus on the enjoyable things in my life as much as I'd like to. Not only has my photography been put on the back burner but my friends and family have paid the price too. I won't go into details about my health, but I have been dealing with a certain unexplainable problem on and off for the last 10 years. Anyone that has dealt with a chronic health problem knows how debilitating it can be. It affects every aspect of your life and your relationships can definitely suffer because of it. Like a lot of people do, I had been putting off going to the doctor for lack of having health insurance and decided this week that I could no longer put up with the pain. I ventured out of the house before work insearch of a doctor that would be able to see me that day and be easy on my ever dwindling pocket book. The stars must have been alligned for me yesterday because I was able to get an appointment at my doctors office with a different doctor than my usual and today I am on day 1 of hopefully a healthy future. And because I have been such a bad blogger recently, here are a couple of pictures of the gorgeous flowers my sister gave me and my awesome new chucks from my boyfriend for my 25th birthday last Thursday. A week later and the flowers are still looking stunning.

I'm finally getting around to posting these pictures of my adorable nephew from a couple of weeks ago. Today is his 1st Birthday and I couldn't be more amazed at how fast he is growing up. He wasn't yet walking at the time these were taken 3 weeks ago but he is walking full speed ahead now just in time for his main entrance at his party tomorrow. Here are a few pictures from our day, well hour at Chatham Manor. It was over 100 degrees with the heat index but Philip was a good sport. After that we headed to Camille's for Philip's snack and cold refreshments. I love this little man and I am so glad to be a part of his life. Happy 1st Birthday Philip!

I always knew that in order to be my happiest in life I would need to be doing something in the creative field. As a tiny child I dabbled in anything and everything artistic. At the age of 4 I was re-purposing my Barbie's clothing to make new fabulous items for her to wear. I've taken on painting, drawing, interior decorating, fashion and jewelry design, and dancing amongst some of my hobbies. But it wasn't until this past year when we purchased our first digital SLR camera that my creative passions seemed to be completely released. I'd always loved taking pictures and looking through our shoe boxes full of family photos. I'm a very sentimental person and have a tendency to want to hold onto silly things in an attempt to capture a piece of that moment forever. (And I have shoe boxes full of receipts, love notes, and movie stubs to prove it.) But being able to record all of the precious moments in my life and of those around me has proven to be a much less cluttered way of collecting memories and putting my creative brain to good use. I love every aspect of taking pictures. Every picture snapped is an opportunity to manifest an entirely new vision never before seen. Not to mention that I get to meet awesome new clients and photographers.

So as of today I feel like I am finally falling into my niche. I love what I'm doing and I love feeling so alive doing it! And best of all I get to share these experiences with the love of my life and my best friend along the way. He inspires me and encourages me to be the best me that I can be. (I know its corny, but its true. I love you Michael!)

16 months ago I could never have imagined how much love I was going to feel for this little man. One look at him through the hospital nursery window and my heart melted into a puddle of mushy-gushy. His name is Julian and he is Michael's nephew. He is the sweetest, most trusting, and easy going baby you'll ever meet and I adore him as if he were my own. The other day we decided to fill up his new pool and let him splash out some of his energy before nap time. The end result: a sleepy baby and some melt my heart photos. I just wish I could keep him at this age forever!

I love his little belly! Might as well flaut it while it's still cute.

Josh & Amanda's Wedding | Second Shooting for Natalie Franke Photography

I was thrilled to have the privilege to second shoot Amanda and Josh's wedding with the amazingly talented Natalie Franke of Natalie Franke Photography. Michael was along with us capturing the video of their wedding and snapping some shots in between. The ceremony and reception were held at The Grachur Club in Pasedena, MD alongside the Magothy River and couldn't have been a more gorgeous spot to have a beach themed wedding. Josh and Amanda are a beautiful couple and I wish them the happiest of days to come!

I had a rough time narrowing down the images for this post but here are a few of my favorites from the day. And thanks again to Natalie Franke for letting us tag along and quickly becoming an amazing new friend!

The groom's grandfather was an absolute riot. I'm not sure what he was telling Josh here, but I'm sure it was funny.

What a handsome group they are! They seemed completely relaxed and full of laughs before the ceremony. This was one of the fewer serious moments between the three of them.

The bride left no detail undone. And me being the detail queen I just had to post a bunch of my favorites. I especially loved her bouquet and the starfish details everywhere.

I snapped this just as I came around the corner and it is one of my favorites of the day. I love the moments that happen between a couple when they don't know the photographer is around.

We were so excited when the gorgeous Diana asked us to take pictures of her and even more delighted that she knew exactly what she wanted. A white dress, hay bails and a barn...what more could a photographer ask for? I could feel my heart skip a beat from her requests.
We arrived bright an early just to check out the area and fell in love with this particular location. Diana was down for anything we asked of her and wasn't afraid of a little wet hay. I think she was way more at ease in that field than I was...she even gave me a pair of her boots to wear and take home as a souvenier from our session. (Lesson learned: Wear Boots in fields not flip-flops & bring cold refreshments and towels for the wet ground and client. lol) We can only hope to have more amazing clients like Diana in the future! So thanks Diana for being such an inspiration and making our job so fulfilling!

She climbed right on top of that hay bail like a pro. I'm sure I could have done it, but it definitely wouldn't have looked so graceful.

Hello! Are you there Natalie?

So I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how pull more clients out of the woodwork and I completely miss the opportunity handed to me. What a bonehead! I'm standing here at work and the perfect couple comes in asking about teeth whitening. (For those of you that don't know, I whiten teeth during the day to keep the bread on the table and pay for my expensive photography pursuit.)

So anyway, the woman proceeds to tell her boyfriend that she would love them to have their teeth done for their wedding. And I say...Oh congratulations and continue talking about the teeth whitening process to them. Could I be any more dense? I just gave myself a pep talk on needing to take the leap by asking people if I can take their pictures and I completely bombed. I didn't even think about asking them until they stepped out of the store. Then what was I supposed to do? Run through the mall with my white lab coat on and business card in hand screaming, can I take your pictures??? Ugh....lesson learned. Always be on the look out for prospective opportunities. And who knows...If I see them again today I just might turn into that crazy lady with the business card. What's the worst that could happen? I might get a weird look or some new clients!

Why am I such a chicken?

I have been giving myself a lot of crap lately for not being further in my photography career. Asking myself: why don't you have more paying clients? why don't you have a 5d mII? And when will I book my first "real" wedding? All that hassling myself just to conclude that maybe I don't have what it takes to make it in this business.

And then I snap out of it. Of course I'm good enough! Why am I being so hard on myself in the first place? I have only had a camera in my anxious little hands for 7 months and it is completely not fair to expect so much already. Sigh...but I do. I am an over achiever and I want to be the best at everything I do. So how can I push my business along at a healthy rate and not get so down on myself about what I haven't achieved by now?

At this point I need to be more willing to jump out on a limb and ask people if I can take their pictures. I know enough people, so why can't I bring myself to ask them? I mean, I wouldn't even charge them! It's a sweet deal for both of us...so what's holding me back? My fear of rejection, of embarrassment, incompetence, or am I just being lazy? It's probably a combination.

But I have to do it! I just have to.

Highland Prom 2009

This past Sunday we took a drive out to the beautiful town of warrenton to photography my younger sister Sarah and her friends for her senior prom. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and perfect for prom hair...no worries about humidity frizzies or muddy high heals. We had just about 45 minutes to work in some pictures and plenty of beautiful scenary. Here is a little slideshow for my sister Sarah, enjoy!

Launching our New Identity!

For months we have been contemplating changing our business name. Hence the reason we never got around to getting a website up. We didn't want to put money into a domain name and website that wasn't going to be permanent for us. Although we loved our original name (wink photography), a lot of people were having problems finding us. There are way too many photographers going by that title and we didn't want to have our clients, friends, and family to have a hard time sorting out which wink we were. Businesses also need good branding to be successful and our new name will give us just that. Our photographic style has been evolving and it was definitely the right time to have the rest of the business come into it's own. So we have given our business a complete makeover which means a new name, an evolving style, new marketing material, and a new website and blog. We are both so extatic to see the changes that are happening and so greatful to everyone that has been a part of our ever-evolving journey. For our clients the new website means an easier and more convenient way of viewing our work and their session images. Clients will be able to share their session gallery with friends and famliy and even be able to place their orders online by using the shopping cart feature. The site will be live in a couple of days, as we are just making a few final changes. We will let you know when the site is up, please stay tuned too see the rest of our journey unfold. =)

Michael decided to go downtown with the camera the other day while he had some free time and just a little bit of time before the sun went down. He's good with people and started up a conversation with two random people at Hyperion Coffee. He asked them if they'd like to take some pictures and they were all for it! Now if that's not good portfolio building I don't know what is. And really for us it's not about the money. The joy that comes out of capturing someone's "life" essence and being able to make a memory for someone is priceless. And so fulfilling! So if you two are out there and you see these, I hope you like them. Sorry we don't even have names for these great people. But if you want to take more pictures just let us know! We'd love to have more of a session!

He was always interested in plates, bowls, and utensils so we found him a little kitchen set to play with. They are surprisingly hard to come by unless you have a girl, everything that you can find in stores is pink. He is especially fond of the forks and is content walking around with one in his hand all day. Maybe we have a future little cook on our hands. =)

Today I helped with a newborn session of Marta Locklear's. It was quite a job for Marta to get this little guy to sleep but once she did, he was out. He was only a week old and not much over 6 lbs. I love newborn babies, but the tiny ones always get a larger piece of my heart. I absolutely love the texture and creaminess of this picture. What a cutie!

What is wrong with the world?

So I have been waiting for a package from Etsy that I ordered on the 16th. I have been checking the mail because I ordered some jewelry findings for my new endeavor on Etsy and I am really anxious to get started on the designing. Usually sellers are pretty fast with filling the order and shipping the items. Although every once in a while it may take a little longer than expected. So I have been patient and decided not to contact the seller just yet. I never received a tracking number from the seller either which makes it a little annoying. When I went out to check the mail earlier there still wasn't a package for me. But on the way back to the house I spotted a small torn and battered cardboard box on the driveway behind my car. My heart stopped. I figured it was my order and that it had suffered an ill fated death by some cruel person. I imagined all the possible outcomes that could have taken place. Maybe someone stole it off of my porch, ripped it open and ran off with my goods, But not before scribbling some hateful and ridiculous remarks on the box. I had always been a little upset when I saw other people's trash on the side of the road. But never did I think it was placed there on purpose or felt angry like I needed to get revenge. I have more important things to do. And just so you guys know, if this box of mine did get left on the side of the road. It wasn't my doing. My trash is picked up by the trash man. So it would have had to have flown out of the back of the trash truck which is definitely not in my control. I don't even spit gum on the ground! How dare this person judge me. (Needless to say, I am going to try to avoid jumping to irrational conclusions in my own life more now) So anyway, I looked up the tracking number on the box and the address it found it was not the order I was expecting. It was a past order I received about a week ago for my camera. What a relief! But it still doesn't take away from the issue at hand. Which is....why are people so angry? I feel badly for the person that felt the need to drive to my house and drop off the trash with a nasty note. The box smelled like a garbage truck. There is no way that my bag of trash could have made that box smell that badly. What were they thinking? And they had to have seen the big green trash can about 6 ft to the left of where they left the box. Didn't that tip them off at all? I'm glad they didn't feel the need to call me too, since my phone number is printed on the shipping lable. Oh well. I just hope that person is relieved now that they did their moral duty. lol. And hopefully I will receive my long awaited package soon. =)

It's been a rough last couple of days between being sick and work problems. I needed to just sit down and have some fun with mindless editing. And I still have so many photos of baby P to go through. I'm striving for this year to bring some relief we so desperately need. Working for other people and giving more than your receiving isn't cutting it anymore. Well, actually it has never cut it. I decided yesterday that I am going to bring back another passion from my past. No, not an ex-boyfriend (don't worry Michael). This passion is designing jewelry. I had been making and selling jewelry at my mom's gift shop for a couple of years and was really loving it. To top it off it was bringing in some extra cash and I was getting to do what I love which is creating. I guess with all the stress of everyday life I lost interest and sadly hid all of my beloved jewels and gems away in my closet. I think I need to bring it back to fulfill my need to create, to be able to give beauty back to others and also to use it as sort of a therapy. I need some calmness in my life. Especially right now. And I think maybe it could turn into something more amazing than it was in the past. So I have set up an Etsy account and I will be listing the first of my collection very shortly. I am SOO excited! I need this and I know it will be amazing.

On a different note: Cloth Diapering. How much respect does that deserve?! This little man is already doing good for his planet and he's only been here for 5 months. I think little P has really big aspirations. Watch out Barack! You are going to have some young competition!

Michael and I spent the Super Bowl celebrating another Steeler's victory with the family yesterday. Baby P passed out right before the game was getting really intense, but woke up just in time for the screams of excitement! I figured it was a perfect opportunity to get some shots in of baby p. And I had been itching to get my finger on the trigger after a long love-hate relationship with my bathroom this weekend. I won't give out any details but for the record food poisoning isn't fun. The sun was fighting us as it was nearing 5:30 but we managed to get in a few good ones. I'll be going back to do another session really soon. Next time I'll plan for more light and hopefully I'll be back to feeling like myself again.

2009 is a fresh start and we really feel like it is going to bring great things. We finally got around to quickly designing a business card and getting them ordered. It really only took about 20 minutes so I'm not sure why we were avoiding it. lol. I think they turned out really beautiful. The photo doesn't really do them justice but it's the best I can do for now. Now when people ask us for a business card we're always prepared! Right now we are working on getting our website up and running, it's going to be so exciting. Stay tuned!

For those of you who don't already know, I have been interning with an amazing photographer since early December. Her name is Marta Locklear of Marta Locklear Photography. She has been gracious enough to teach me her knowledge of photography and about the business. And I am so lucky to have been given the opportunity. Throughout 2009 I'll be tagging along on some of her sessions and shooting side by side her. It really helps to get more experience, run though the flow of sessions and workflow, and build our portfolio. Not many people, let alone photographers are willing to give an up and comer that kind of opportunity. And for that I am truly thankful! This is the sweet little girl from Marta's session yesterday. There is only one real downfall from being a second shooter on a portrait session, and that is not being able to get the shots you might have wanted to get. But that's ok because it is way more important to me to try not to get in the way of Marta's shooting and make sure she can get all of her shots. So whatever shots I can get off to ths side of her, I'm happy for. I'm sure her family will be ecstatic about the session photos. Marta really has a keen eye for capturing people at their best. I took this photo driving 55mph shooting through the glass. There was an older couple driving next to me giving me dirty looks. I know, I know, not the safest thing to do. But I was careful about it and it was well worth it. We edited this one together, which always turns out an amazing end result. The sky was so breathtaking this morning, I'm so glad I ran back upstairs to grab my camera before I left the house. It's capturing moments like these that remind me why life is so beautiful.

This was a really grimy area, but she was a great sport. These shots happened after we we're making our way to the car just when the sun came out in all it's glory. Initially we went back to get a shot that we loved but was a little out of focus. Once we got that shot the sun peaked out for the first time that day and gave us just enough time to plop down in the grass and catch a few shots. We were so excited to make us of that area and the pictures turned out amazing for having only 2 minutes of shooting light. The sacrifice of a dirty backside was definitely worth it. lol.

Today is our 9 year anniversary! It's amazing to think back to when we first met in high school., both of us we're so different. We've each grown tremendously as a couple and as individuals and taking on this new adventure of starting our business has only brought us closer. One of our goals this year is to take more pictures of the two of us. We hardly have any, which is really sad. Next year is going to be a huge celebration for us as we will be hitting our 10th anniversary. Now, I know we're not married. But married or not....how many people now a days can make it to 10 and still be happy together?
So I hope you'll continue to follow us on this fast and exciting journey of ours wherever it may take us!

Today was a really fun day for Michael and I. We had our first semi-senior session and it was a ton of fun! It's already half way through her senior year but it is never to late to capture

It seemed like a good idea at the time. He had just gotten into his 2nd Christmas outfit of the day and the stand mixer seemed like the perfect place to prop him. He was tolerant for about 2 minutes before he let us know he was done. What a good baby.
